The GT3 variant made its debut alongside the 997.1Turbo at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show, continuing Porsche's tradition of homologating aerodynamic features for racing while offering race-ready cars for customer teams. The 997.1 GT3 packs a punch with its normally aspirated engine, featuring a new variable intake system. Generating 415PS (305kW; 409bhp) and 405 Nm (299 lb⋅ft) of torque, it boasts an impressive 8,400 rpm redline, matching that of the Carrera GT flagship. Unlike earlier models, the 3.6ltr dry-sump engine of the GT3 avoids the rear main seal problems often associated with integrated dry-sump engines.

The GT3's distinctive bodywork includes a specialized front bumper to enhance cooling for the front-mounted radiators, along with a split spoiler at the rear. Additional features include a unique rear bumper and center tailpipes designed to dissipate heat from the engine. Sporting a lowered suspension and 30-series 305 mm (12 in) tyres mounted on 19-inch (483 mm) wheels, the GT3 tips the scales at 1,395kg (3,075lb).

Unlike its predecessor, the 997 GT3 prioritizes driver comfort, offering "comfort" seats and the Porsche Communication Management system.

For enthusiasts seeking a more track-oriented driving experience, the special GT3 RS model steps up the game by eliminating many luxuries typically found in a Carrera. Available with a full roll cage, carbon fiber seats, and a large fixed rear wing, the RS trim delivers a race-car-for-the-road feel. Introduced in Europe in October 2006 and in North America in March 2007, the GT3 RS paved the way for the racing version, known as the 997 GT3 RSR.

Equipped with a six-speed transmission featuring closer ratios, the GT3 accelerates to 97 km/h (60 mph) in 4.1 seconds, while the RS achieves the same in precisely 4 seconds. Continuing its impressive performance, the GT3 reaches 161 km/h (100 mph) in 9.2 seconds, with a maximum top speed of 310 km/h (193 mph).
