由于制动过程中产生的摩擦和热量，刹车片不断磨损。当刹车片磨损到预定水平时，刹车片内的传感器会与金属刹车盘接触并形成电路。这反过来会点亮仪表板上的警告灯，通知驾驶员刹车需要更换。
