Take your pick: Basic or Premium

The Gen 6 Perma-Tune for the 911SC comes in two models: the Premium ignition module and the Basic ignition module.

The Premium ignition module features a smooth, matt finish that mimics the patina of the original aluminum die cast part.
It provides full control over RPM limit, mechanical advance timing, power output, multi spark function and has many other features that can be programmed using a computer, tablet or smart phone.
This comes preprogrammed for the Porsche 911SC so programming changes are optional. The programmable mechanical advance feature is very handy for restoring a distributor advance curve that has been distorted by worn mechanical parts without having to disassemble and repair the distributor.
The Gen 6 Premium Perma-Tune makes diagnostics easier by providing onboard diagnostics that are automatically displayed by two coloured LED function lights. These LED lights assist in diagnosing both the vehicle and the ignition module. The green LED is a status indicator that can flash diagnostic fault codes. The red LED is a strobe light that flashes each time the coils fires in the same manner as a timing light. This LED is especially useful for detecting intermittent engine misfire caused by wiring or distributor problems.
These LED function lights are mounted in the harness electrical connector and can only be seen when the module is powered up. There are three self-resetting overload protectors that assist in troubleshooting while protecting your Perma-Tune from damage. The overload protectors are hidden underneath the ignition module so they do not spoil the original look of the part. Refer to the Diagnostics section of this web site for more information about the diagnostics system and overload protectors.

DISTRIBUTOR TRIGGER SIGNAL
The second most common cause of SC engine ignition failure is the ignition trigger circuit. Since the ignition box is controlled by the magnetic pulse generator located inside the distributor, any disruption in the triggering signal will cause the ignition box to malfunction. Be aware that the connectors can push back in the housing. Pull the rubber boot back to inspect the connection between the box and harness.
Full disassembly and inspection of the distributor is highly recommended due to the intermittent nature of triggering problems. Pay special attention to the distributor trigger shielded cable ( green wire ), magnetic pulse generator magnet and magnetic pulse generator winding connection as these parts are known to fail in combination. An especially common problem is a broken magnet pole. Evidence of arching between the magnetic pulse generator magnet points indicates a defective rotor. In this case replace the rotor, magnetic pulse winding, green wire and ignition box. The Perma-Tune high performance triggering is so accurate that worn out distributor shaft bearings can be detected by the tachometer. This is indicated by the tachometer needle slightly bouncing at idle. Trigger signal problems can cause double triggering which results in a weak ignition spark. Due to the lower triggering resolution of the stock ignition box, some symptoms of trigger signal problems can be more evident after the Perma-Tune is installed. Refer to the vehicle maintenance manual for triggering signal wave form specifications and distributor repair instructions.
To quickly test the triggering circuit without the use of an oscilloscope: Unplug the harness connector from the ignition box. Refer to the 911SC Installation Instructions diagram, connect an Ohm meter between pins 3 and 6 of the harness connector. To prevent the possibility of misdiagnosis, tug on the green triggering signal wire located at the base of the distributor while viewing the meter. The published specification for the magnetic pulse generator is 600 Ohms +- 100. Our experience has shown that a variation of +- 25 Ohm indicates a need to repair defective connections or to replace the magnetic pulse generator windings.
